BACKGROUND
Emerge America is a political leadership training program for Democratic women. Our mission is to build a national network of state based affiliates that train Democratic women to run for public office. Emerge originated in the San Francisco Bay Area (www.emergeca.org) five years ago and currently has state-based programs in six other states. THE OPPORTUNITY
We are seeking a self-motivated and highly efficient staff person to provide administrative, fundraising, and program support to Emerge America. This position will provide support to all Emerge America staff including the President, Chief Operating Officer, and Affiliate Director and will report to the President and COO. The Administrative Assistant will be responsible for all administrative and office management functions of this growing nonprofit organization. This is an outstanding opportunity for someone seeking to enter politics and/or political and institutional fundraising.
THE POSITION
- Provide administrative and project support to all agency staff; assist in all organizational tasks, as needed
- Open and prioritize mail
- Answer main Emerge telephone
- Assist President with schedule, travel plans, and other administrative tasks
- Maintain agency website and provide technology support to affiliates on their websites as needed
- Maintain agency intranet and computer filing systems
- Serve as the primary point of contact for all agency/vendor relationships
- Serve as the power user for Emerge America's database, ensuring its proper usage by all affiliates
- Create and maintain excellent filing and administrative systems
- Provide support on all fundraising tasks including generating thank you letters, making follow-calls or events, assembling mailings, and handling event logistics
- Help plan and execute semi-annual affiliate convenings
- Assist with donor and prospect research
- Assist with research of political leaders in various states
- Conduct research on Emerge candidates
- Assemble information for monthly newsletter
- Maintain press binder
- Maintain office supplies
- Take notes at staff meetings and steering committee meetings
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Excellent web and technology skills and comfort trouble-shooting with technology
- Ability to create and maintain friendly and professional relationships with staff, key stakeholders, and vendors; great communication skills
- Proven track record of excellent follow-through and accountability
- Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to prioritize tasks and keep track of multiple projects
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Comfort on the telephone

JOB SCHEDULE AND LOCATION:
The Administrative Assistant will work in the Emerge America offices from 9-5:30, Monday through Friday. This is not a position that allows for telecommuting. The Emerge America is located in downtown San Francisco and is very accessible by public transportation.

This position is: Non- Exempt Union Level: III
The Manager for Political Affairs for NARAL Pro-Choice California is responsible for the management and implementation of NARAL Pro-Choice California's legislative, electoral and certain educational strategies.
Responsibilities:
- Manage NARAL Pro-Choice California's Privacy PAC including campaign research, making recommendations to the State Director and PAC Board; coordinating Board fundraising efforts; ensure that the PAC and all political work is in compliance with California regulations, laws and reporting requirements; liaise with the PAC Board and prepare for PAC meetings
- Coordinate with targeted campaigns including recruiting volunteers, media outreach, and mobilizing NARAL Pro-Choice California activists
- Oversee the grassroots activities of NARAL Pro-Choice California including writing Choice Action Network messages, ensuring robust on-line and off-line relationships with activists, providing strategic guidance to State Director on program development
- Provide leadership on NARAL Pro-Choice California Foundation projects
- Build and/or maintain relationships with key coalition partners and outreach to other allied organizations/constituencies
- Manage NARAL Pro-Choice California's legislative strategy, including researching and recommending legislation, building relationships with elected officials and their staffs, strategizing and tracking sponsored bills, managing contract lobbyist
- Oversee NARAL Pro-Choice California's Intern and Volunteer Program including recruitment and day to day management
- Manage independent contractors as needed
Qualifications:
- Commitment to women's reproductive rights
- Minimum of 3 years experience in legislative offices and/or political campaigns
- Excellent organizational skills and detail-oriented
- Excellent written, presentation and public speaking skills
- Able to work with a wide variety of people and prioritize multiple projects
- Experience managing staff members to achieve organizational goals
- Independent and self-motivated but also a team player
- Ability to travel, includes some evenings and weekends
- College degree required

HR & Benefits

- Administrate staff and contractor paperwork, including I-9's, benefits & payroll set up, W-9's,
and contracts
IT
- Oversee IT support: contracts, purchasing and maintenance of phone system, DSL computer
hardware & software, fax, printers, and all other office equipment
- Oversee weekly hard drive backups for all staff, or implement a system to automate this
- Manage external IT resources (sys admin, vendors, etc.)

The San Francisco School Alliance (the Alliance) is one of a growing number of intermediary civic organizations working to guide and support the improvement agendas of their local school districts in the nation’s cities. As such, the Alliance works with the leadership of the San Francisco Unified School District to prioritize needs and identify challenges with the shared goal of creating strong, powerful learning environments for the 55,000 children and young people who attend the City’s public schools.
In close partnership with district leaders and other community-based, parent and civic organizations, we develop strategic, long-term initiatives and organize expert teams of educators, non-profit partners, reformers, researchers, funders and others to implement the agenda for transforming the district and strengthening teaching and learning in every school in the city. We hold the district accountable to measurable results and provide the highest standards of efficiency, accountability, and oversight for the private and community support of San Francisco’s public schools. The Alliance has grown rapidly since it was founded in 2005. Our budget will be $ 5 million + in the coming 2008/09 fiscal year.
PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS: The San Francisco School Alliance seeks an individual who will provide strategic leadership, creativity and energy to building our development and fundraising capacity and success. In addition to bringing a track record of experience and success in non-profit fundraising, we are looking for an individual who has impressive interpersonal and diplomatic skills; is an extremely gifted writer and communicator, and who has a strong personal commitment to excellence and equity in public education. The ideal candidate will be thoughtful, creative, goal-oriented with a strong, entrepreneurial spirit. The candidate will have at least six to eight years experience in supervision/administration of the development/fundraising operations for a non-profit organization, preferably in the Bay Area. He/she will have excellent internal team building, planning and budgeting skills. The ideal candidate will understand the importance of strategic communications to fundraising and development. The candidate must have demonstrated exceptional organizational and leadership skills and have the ability to communicate effectively (both in written and oral form). OVERVIEW AND
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director of Development is a new position reporting to the Executive Director and a member of the senior leadership team at the Alliance. The Director of Development will work closely with the Development Committee of the Board of Directors.
Leadership/Management:
- Helps craft and implement the organization’s development plan and strategy for the next three to five years.
- Builds, motivates, and promotes staff and board participation in the fundraising strategy of the organization.
- Develops and coordinates the organization’s fundraising systems, including tracking of all gifts, grant reports, and results to goals.
- Possesses the imagination and connections to aim high at meeting our fundraising goals
- Creates and encourages a collegial and participatory work environment where trust, integrity and open communication are valued.
Alliance Fundraising Strategies:
- Event Organizing: Significant track record of success (and enjoyment of) organizing large fundraising events, including an annual signature citywide event with strong corporate and business support, and in 2009 and beyond, to develop a plan for an additional more grassroots, creative event for teachers, parents and supporters of the Alliance (i.e. dance party/creative celebration at City Hall.)
- Major Individual Donor Strategy: Experience with developing and building a major donor strategy to engage individuals in the work of the organization at the “Leadership Circle” level of $1,000, $2,500, $5,000 and up.
- Foundation Grant Strategy: A successful track record of working with private and public foundations, locally and nationally, to raise significant funds and multi-year grants.
Communications, Advocacy and Political Savvy:
- Able to shape identity of Alliance through print materials, outreach strategy, events and the website.
- Ideas and experience with ways to use the internet and 21st century technology to reach new and current donors in new, creative ways.
- Superior writing, speaking and analytical skills.
Planning + Evaluation:
- Designs the long-range and strategic planning for the Alliance’s fundraising strategy with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors, ensuring that benchmarks are established for measuring success and that the planning and evaluation cycles are designed as appropriate.
- Develops and monitors the annual action plan based on the strategic fundraising goals adopted by the Board of Directors.
- Develops and oversees the fundraising/development budget which includes an accurate, realistic forecasting of revenues and expenses for implementing the fundraising plan, based on the goals established in collaboration with the executive director.
COMPENSATION: A base salary commensurate with experience plus attractive benefits.

The Environmental Working Group, an environmental research and advocacy organization with offices in Washington, DC and Oakland, CA, seeks a California State Government Relations Director to represent us on legislative and regulatory issues. The Director will be based in Sacramento, and will report to EWG's Vice President/West Coast in Oakland and its Director of Government Affairs in Washington.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will:
- Have substantial experience in legislative and policy battles at the state level, preferably in a leadership, decision-making capacity, including experience drafting and interpreting legislation and regulations.
- Have superlative communication skills, including experience and facility with print and broadcast media, and strong interpersonal skills.
- Have direct legislative and policy experience in Sacramento.
- Be an independent and creative thinker.
- Possess a strong commitment to protecting the environment and human health.
- Have experience in media, Internet and grassroots-driven issue advocacy.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Government Relations Director will:
- Develop and direct all aspects of EWG's California legislative work under the supervision of the Director of Government Affairs, and work closely with the organization's leadership to plan and execute all related activities.
- Establish and maintain relationships with state legislators, staff and regulatory agencies, especially by identifying opportunities for EWG research that will inform legislative and regulatory initiatives.
- Advocate for and organize support for California state legislation that advances EWG's agenda of protecting human health and natural resources, or oppose and organize opposition to legislation detrimental to that agenda.
- Support the Vice President/West Coast's representation of EWG with the Sacramento-based news media.
