4TH ANNUAL EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
Our 4th Annual Fundraiser, held on Wednesday, May 14 in San Francisco at the beautiful Regency Center with special guest Washington Governor Chris Gregoire and honoring Assembly Speaker Karen Bass as our Emerge 2008 Woman of the Year was a wonderful success! Funds raised provide support for the Emerge California program. More than 300 people attended to hear remarks from program members Estelle Clemons (June campaign info below), newly elected Piedmont City Councilwoman Margaret Fujioka who introduced Speaker Bass – fresh from her swearing in as Speaker the night before in Sacramento, and Rachel Norton (Nov 08 San Francisco School Board candidate) who introduced Washington Governor Chris Gregoire. All speakers were incredibly inspiring, with Speaker Bass and Governor Gregoire calling on women to actualize their own political aspirations, and motivating us to support women when they run for office because when women run, they win in similar numbers to men.
Emerge California would like to thank Stephanie Berger; Philip Cohen; Copy Station; Karl Dannecker with Corporate Media Systems; Stephanie Graves; Michael Jennings of Small Potatoes Catering; Photographer Aengus McGiffin; Jenica Pugh of the Regency Center; Catalina Ruiz-Healy for the media presentation at the event; and Julie Wertz for the invitation design. As well, we'd like to thank Emerge California Board Chair Margot Biehle, and Board Members Hala Hijazi, Teri Olle and Tammy Paster for all their hard work and input. A special thanks to Emerge California assistant Jessica Chiavara.
And a big thank you to all who contributed! We very much appreciate your support – we can't do this without it. And we still need your help! If you are inspired to give again, or would like to support Emerge California for the first time this year, please go to emergeca.org/donate.

LEADERSHIP PROGRAM INFORMATION
Women's Policy Institute (WPI) is now accepting applications for its sixth class of fellows. The only program of its kind in the nation, the vision for the Institute is to increase the number of community-based women leaders in California who are actively involved in shaping and implementing policies that affect the health and well-being of women and girls. The program provides intensive advocacy and leadership training each year for a diverse group of up to 30 California women who are leading non-profit organizations and seek to act as a bridge between the needs of communities and policymakers. In its first five years, the WPI has trained over 130 women, and fellows have helped to pass nine new laws that positively impact women's lives throughout California. Areas of focus for the 2008-2009 program are: economic justice, environmental health & justice, criminal justice, reproductive health & justice, and elder women's issues. The Women's Policy Institute is a program of the Women's Foundation of California.
For more information on the Women's Policy Institute and to download an application, please visit womensfoundca.org/wpiapply
The deadline for applications is June 11, 2008.
