Cherise Khaund

Class of 2017

Cherise Khaund's mission is to advance educational opportunities for all students. After earning her Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, she joined AmeriCorps*VISTA as a community organizer, launching tutoring programs and connecting parents who didn't speak English with their children’s schools. She then earned a Masters Degree in Education Policy and Nonprofit Management at the University of Washington in Seattle. Working for the League of Education Voters, she organized parents across the state to improve statewide funding for public schools, and designed the weighted formula of how the dollars of Initiative 884 would be distributed to K-12 school districts.  She is currently Walnut Acres Elementary Parent Faculty Club President, where she also leads a coalition with the city and neighborhood to create safe routes for kids to walk and bike to school. She ran for MDUSD School Board in 2016, earning over 33,000 votes yet coming in 3rd for 2 positions.  She feels inspired by connecting to so many people who care about ensuring the promise of quality public schools for all, and is energized to run again in 2018.
